Absolutely my favorite event of the year. Amazing air, food, digs, yoga, dance, zils, Ayurveda, Manca Pavli, waterfalls, butterflies, coffee, hot tubs, and deep relaxation. .
It’s always nerve-wracking to prepare for a long trip abroad. I’ll be gone for a month, so what I bring will define my experience for a significant period of time. Ack. That being said, I have everything that I truly need in my heart, my daily practice is memorized, and thankfully fruit can be found everywhere. This thought soothes me somewhat.
Looking forward to meeting new dancers, seeing how the others have grown, lots of walks in Amsterdam, and delectable coffee (on Fridays). This summer, you can find me here:
For a crazy fun time show. What could be better than the combined forces of Fishtank Ensemble and Kafana Balkan? A CD Release party complete with Belly Dancing. Wahoo! Come on down, it’s sure to be a rollicking time.

The LA Weekly calls them “cross pollinated gypsy music….one of the most thrilling young acts on the planet.” Formed in 2005 and playing everywhere from the hippest LA clubs to festivals, cultural centers, museums, parades, and even on the street, the band includes two explosive violins, the world’s best slap bass player, musical saw, flamenco and gypsy jazz guitar, opera, jazz and gypsy vocals and one little banjolele. Tackling everything from French hot jazz to wild Serbian and Transylvanian gypsy anthems, Flamenco, and oddball originals, the band is a not to be missed event for world music lovers…and everyone will love this intoxicating mix of music!! www.fishtankensemble.com
Kafana Balkan started as a benefit for the Hleb i Sir Cirkus (Bread and Cheese) who make free circus shows and workshops for refugee children in Kosovo. They continued promoting Balkan music through Bay Area and won the Best of the Bay from the Guardian and the Best of SF from the Weekly. Collaboration with Fishtank Ensemble is their latest endeavor. www.myspace.com/kafanabalkan
Here is a tiny hope that this blog will be updated semi-frequently. At the very least you will find new information on the Portland and travel schedule pages, as well as a new home for Le Serpent Rouge’s tour information. I’ve got big hopes for a semi-interactive Tribal Fusion Belly Dance page, and new bootlegs from recent performances will be uploaded frequently, whether I like it or not. Please feel free to click on the rss feed icon in the upper left-hand corner to receive updates in your iGoogle, Google reader, or any of the other gazillion options now available.
Now current info: Tribal Fest blew my mind, my pocket book, and my nervous system. Thank goodness I had a week to recover. I spoke with people again and again who felt that our dance form is growing up! No two groups were alike, the bar has been raised yet again (ahem… Zoe, Frank, Unmata, Tribaltique, Ariellah, too many to mention!), and everyone was feeling positive and supportive. We’ve had our growing pains, but right now I feel like our community is supportive and excited. I’m so happy to see it grow in this direction. More “we” and less “I” makes a happy, healthy heart.
Now cometh the big gear up for June: Fat Chance Belly Dance’s Devotion, The Carnal Cabaret on the Queen Mary (gulp!), and an attempt at a lightning-fast, shredder-style solo with Fishtank Ensemble in SF. Visit the travel schedule for details.
